IST’s Lower School (Grades 1–5) in Bee Cave/Austin, TX offers IB inquiry-based learning, Singapore Math, dual language, STEM, and signature travel experiences.
Expanding Minds, Deepening Inquiry
In IST's Lower School, students in Grades 1 through 5 build on the foundation of early childhood with increasing depth, rigor, and ownership over their education. Guided by the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), our students don't just absorb information — they ask meaningful questions, investigate real-world problems, and develop the habits of mind that define lifelong learners.
Inquiry-Based, Transdisciplinary Learning
Each year, Lower School students engage in six dynamic transdisciplinary units of inquiry, exploring themes like "Who We Are," "How the World Works," and "Sharing the Planet." These units connect every subject — language, math, science, social studies, and the arts — through a central idea, helping students see how knowledge is interconnected.
In addition to homeroom instruction, students receive specialist teaching in Mandarin, Spanish, STEM, Music, Art, and Physical Education. Our mathematics program uses the Singapore Math approach, building deep conceptual understanding and strong problem-solving skills.
Beyond the Classroom
Starting in Grade 2, IST students participate in educational travel that extends the curriculum beyond Austin. Lower School trips have included visits to NASA Space Center in Houston and, by Grade 5, students conduct hands-on field research at The Tetons Science School in Wyoming. These experiences make learning tangible, memorable, and transformative.
In addition to Trip Week, students enjoy 4–6 local academic field trips each year across Central Texas.
Developing Global Citizens
With continued study in Spanish and Mandarin and a community representing over 40 nationalities, IST Lower School students develop the linguistic skills and cultural awareness they need to thrive in a rapidly changing, interconnected world.
A Community Where Families Belong
IST provides a close-knit school community where families from over 40 nationalities come together. From parent breakfasts to the International Harvest Festival, there are countless opportunities to connect, celebrate, and grow alongside your child.
