Katie Weaver, Support Teacher & Art Specialist

Katie Weaver is very excited to be joining our Kindergarten classroom as the Support Teacher. Katie was born and raised in Orlando, Florida, and has exhibited a deep passion for the arts for as long as she can remember. At an early age, she displayed her imaginative and artistic tendencies by using modeling clay to sculpt animals; and as time went on, she progressed in her knowledge and understanding of the arts, becoming interested in different varieties of art forms, including ceramics, drawing, painting, and photography. In her studies, Katie loved learning about the different styles artists used to create their masterpieces and how they accomplished these styles.

Unsurprisingly, Katie continued to pursue her love for art, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Central Florida in 2010. During her time there, she studied different types of art and artists, and gained knowledge of different artistic styles, as well as the specific rules that apply to the creation of various art forms. Katie felt inspired to pass on her knowledge of the arts, and depth of technique in the arts, to a new generation so she turned her attention to the teaching of art, and went on to earn her Master’s Degree at the University of Central Florida in Art Education in 2012. Here she learned how to work closely with students to instill in them a deep appreciation and understanding for the arts.

For three years, Katie worked in Clearwater, Florida where she taught Visual Art to elementary students grade K-5. She has recently moved to Austin and is very thrilled to have the opportunity to continue providing students with an appreciation for the arts. Katie is recently engaged and is excited to be getting married in the Austin area.

This has been a very exciting week in music class!

On Monday we had special guest musicians Emma Dean and Eddie Dickerson perform for us during assembly. They were even able to stay and have a ukulele “jam session” with G4 and G5. The students had a chance to explore Mr. Flowers’ primary instrument, the double bass. The students did an excellent job learning the basics of how to play the instrument, and were even open-minded enough to try it themselves!

Students also took some time this week to learn about the life and work of Tom Petty, to appreciate the contributions he made to music during his lifetime.

Around the world and at IST we celebrate World Cerebral Palsy Day! Our Grade 3 students have been reading "Out of My Mind", an inspirational story of a child with Cerebral Palsy. Our student trailblazers decided to take action by organizing a whole school "Wear Green Day" to show support and unity for those who have CP. From our school to everyone with CP you are an inspiration and shining example of courage and commitment to never giving up!
