Nicola Heard, Lead Teacher

Nicola Heard has been a teacher of elementary school children for over twenty five years and still thinks it is the best job in the world! She is English and has been living with her family in the States for eleven years, the last six here in Austin. She holds a Bachelor of Education Honors Degree from College of St. Hild and St. Bede, University of Durham, UK, and is a Certified Teacher in both Texas and Michigan. Prior to the International School of Texas she worked at a local international IB school, in Michigan, in Germany, and for many years in the UK. She enjoyed working in a variety of management positions over the years and teaching children across the whole elementary school age range. Nicola has a child-centric approach to teaching and is a great believer in positive behavior reinforcement. She has five years of experience of teaching in an International Baccalaureate school and enjoys using these PYP skills to further enhance learning within her classroom.

Outside of work she enjoys a range of mainly outdoor activities with her family (husband and two children aged 15 and 19) including travelling, skiing, diving and being out and about on their boat on Lake Travis.

This has been a very exciting week in music class!

On Monday we had special guest musicians Emma Dean and Eddie Dickerson perform for us during assembly. They were even able to stay and have a ukulele “jam session” with G4 and G5. The students had a chance to explore Mr. Flowers’ primary instrument, the double bass. The students did an excellent job learning the basics of how to play the instrument, and were even open-minded enough to try it themselves!

Students also took some time this week to learn about the life and work of Tom Petty, to appreciate the contributions he made to music during his lifetime.

Around the world and at IST we celebrate World Cerebral Palsy Day! Our Grade 3 students have been reading "Out of My Mind", an inspirational story of a child with Cerebral Palsy. Our student trailblazers decided to take action by organizing a whole school "Wear Green Day" to show support and unity for those who have CP. From our school to everyone with CP you are an inspiration and shining example of courage and commitment to never giving up!

Take a look at this amazing World Cerebral Palsy Day video recognizing trailblazers around the globe with CP!

We had such a busy week of learning! Most classrooms have just finished their first unit of inquiry and will be moving on to their 2nd unit of inquiry on Tuesday.

Take a look at our Grade 2 summative assessment, where they presented the inventions they have been working on. By the looks of it, we have some trailblazing inventors on our hands!
