Eleanor Mitchell is originally from London, England, and worked at a highly successful beacon school in London for a number of years, before being recruited to the US in 2010, as a Lead Teacher at the Nord Anglia British International School of Chicago, where she worked as a Lead Teacher, Head of Grade and House Leader for 5 years. In 2015, she moved to Austin with her husband and began as a Lead Teacher at IST. In 2016, they welcomed a baby daughter into their family, and Eleanor took on the role of Deputy Head and IB Coordinator.
Before entering the teaching profession, Eleanor gained her Master of Arts Degree in Cultural Studies from The Open University in London; completed a Post Graduate Certificate of Education with The Forest Primary Collegiate (affiliated with Anglia University); and obtained a First Class Honors Degree in English Literature and Sociology, at The University of Reading. She also completed an International Education Management and Leadership Program in San Francisco in 2013 and has also completed a number of International Baccalaureate Workshops (Levels 1-3), which have enabled her to take on the role of IB Coordinator with enthusiasm and confidence.
Having gained a wealth of teaching and leadership experience, both in the UK and the USA, Eleanor has now been teaching for over 17 years; as a Class Lead Teacher, Grade Leader, P.E. Coordinator, Pastoral Coordinator, Assessment Leader, House Leader, Professional Development Leader, Student Mentor and Liaison Coordinator, and Senior Leadership Team Member.
Embracing a holistic approach towards her teaching practice, Eleanor is passionate about identifying and valuing children for their unique individualities. Each child’s strengths, interests, needs and challenges should be acknowledged and nurtured, in order for every child to fulfil his or her potential. Eleanor places huge importance on children’s pastoral and social development, as well as academic, in order to develop the next generation of globally conscientious and ambitious citizens. She encourages her students to set themselves high standards and goals; and to develop their interests and passions both in and out of the classroom.
Aiming to lead by example, (when time, and a very lively baby daughter, allows) Eleanor pursues a number of hobbies herself, particularly sports, and enjoys setting herself physical challenges to conquer, including; playing netball and representing Chicago at the National Championships; boxing and becoming a Chicago Golden Gloves finalist; and completing triathlons, cycling and running races. When she’s not being active, she likes nothing more than to paint, read or listen to music with a nice cup of English Breakfast tea!
